Overview
The Mediterranean resort of Oludeniz is situated just a fewminutes drive from Fethiye and has an astonishing crystal-clearlagoon and a beautiful photogenic grey-white beach that adornsalmost every Turkish travel brochure. Despite being developed withmany hotels and apartment blocks, the scenery here is spectacularand the town is a lively place to spend a holiday. Perched on themountain plateau overlooking Oludeniz, the resort town of Hisaronuis packed with bars, nightclubs, gift shops and restaurants. Withtheir beautiful, rugged surrounds, both Oludeniz and Hisaronu arefast becoming realised for their potential as an outdoor activitydestination: the beach at Oludeniz offers a huge variety ofwatersports, there is paragliding from Babadag Mountain onto thebeach below, and a selection of boat trips depart regularly fromOludeniz or Fethiye for a day exploring the scenic coastline. Thenumerous paths that wind their way along the hillsides offerspectacular views and sights, including the fascinating 'GreekVillage', which was evacuated during the Turkish-Greek war of1919-1923.
Money
The official currency is the New Turkish Lira (TRY), which wasintroduced on 1 January 2005, whereby six zeros were dropped fromthe TL and the sub-unit New Kurush was created. Currency can beexchanged at banks, exchange booths, post offices, airports andferry ports; banks have the worst rates and highest commissions,but will exchange lesser known foreign currencies. Banks openmainly Monday to Friday, but some are open daily in tourist areas.ATMs are widely available in major cities and tourist areas, butTurkish ATM keypads usually do not have letters of the alphabet ontheir keys. Most bank branches have ATMs which accept Cirrus andPlus. Major credit cards are widely accepted; the most popular areVisa or MasterCard, but American Express is accepted in many of themore expensive places. Travellers cheques can be exchanged at somebanks and currency exchange offices, but are not as welcome as cashor credit cards. US dollars or Euros are preferred. Some pensionsand hotels in the most popular destinations accept US dollars aspayment.

Local time is GMT +2 (GMT +3 from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October).
Language
Turkish is the official language, but English is widely understood in the main tourist areas.
Climate
Both the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts have a typicalMediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers, withtemperature often rising above 30ºC (86ºF) in July andAugust. Showers are unlikely in the summer months, but the rainfallis quite high in winter.
Shopping
Oludeniz has several souvenir shops sprinkled along the Belcekizbeach seafront, and many of the resort hotels and apartmentcomplexes boast their own gift stores. For honest to goodnessshopping, however, catch a dolmus into nearby Hisaronu or Fethiye,where it is possible to enjoy haggling for bargains. Good buys areleather goods, carpets, jewellery and fake designer sunglasses,watches and the like.
Nightlife
Nightlife in Oludeniz is more low-key than in the nearbyresorts, concentrated more on chilling out in beachside terracedbars than frenetic clubbing. Those looking to party the night awaycan take a short trip to Hisaronu or a little further to Fethiyeand find plenty of action. Among the most popular seafront bars areBuzz Beach Bar, the Sugar Shack and Crusoe's. Most of the localresort establishments offer live evening entertainment for guestsas well.
Activities
Oludeniz with its stunning blue lagoon is renowned as the mostbeautiful beach in Turkey, and therefore the water is the mainattraction, particularly for paragliders who come from all over theworld to glide over the turquoise waters from atop the BabadagMountain. Most visitors are tempted to try out the sport withreliable local operators. Diving and snorkelling are other popularactivities. If watersports and sunbathing palls, there are dozensof possibilities for excursions in the surrounding area, includinga 12-island boat trip, visits to various interesting Greek andRoman archaeological sites, the famous 'Butterfly Valley', or theghost town of Kayakoyu. Another essential experience is to enjoy aTurkish Bath, available in many of the resort hotels.
Restaurants
No-one need go hungry in Oludeniz, no matter what your taste infood, and if you do manage to exhaust the resort's possibilities,there is always Hisaronu just a few kilometres away inland with avast array of different nationality restaurants. Somerecommendations are the White Dolphin, for sunset views and cheap, delicious fish dishes; Buffalo's Steak House, renowned for itsT-bones; Blue Star Pride, offering good Turkish cuisine; and theBelcekiz Beach Club A la Carte for an exclusive Mediterranean nightout.
